Read the book several years ago. While initially I kind of thought about the same as you do regarding staying closer to the facts, it is, in the end, a novelized portrayal of the Bible and not a theological or doctrinal survey or study of the Bible.

I would say overall it was an "OK" book. By that I mean to say it was marginal at best.

Thanks for the comment Craig,
I think you missed the point of the post. I am not saying we should ever compromise our beliefs that we feel are central to our faith. What I am saying is that when it gets to the point that these issues cause divisions amongst brothers and sisters in Christ, then we must be willing to agree to disagree, and move on. We shouldn't let differences in our beliefs on baptism, or church government, or authority, stifle fellowship and cooperation amongst churches and fellow Christians. On essentials I say yes, draw a line in the sand, but on non essentials, I don't believe you should be willing to die on that hill. I like the term open handed, closed handed issues. Open handed issues would be those, that don't determine whether one is or isn't saved, closed handed would be those that are essential for the faith(no room for compromise on these).

For some of us, things like Baptism, church authority, and Scripture are centered on Christ and therefore are primary, not secondary issues.
